Span-80 is a yellow to orange oily liquid that readily disperses in warm water and ethanol, and dissolves in a wide range of organic solvents such as propylene glycol, liquid paraffin, methanol and ethyl acetate. With an HLB value of 4.3, it is widely used as an efficient W/O emulsifier.

1. Oilfield & Explosives

• Functions as a high-temperature, salt-tolerant emulsifier in weighted drilling fluids, enhancing cuttings transport.
• Serves as the primary W/O emulsifier in mining emulsion explosives, raising detonation velocity to >4 500 m s⁻¹.

2. Polymer Additives & Metalworking

• Anti-fog agent in PVC (1–1,5 %) and EVA (0.7–1 %) films.
• Lubricity and corrosion-inhibiting booster in metalworking fluids, rust preventives and cutting oils.

• Spin-finish component for nylon tyre-cord and antistatic agent for acrylic fibers, reducing filament breaks and improving smoothness.
• Pigment dispersant in paints and coatings; dosage 0.3–0.8 % on pigment weight for optimum stability.
